The Sunflower Goddess by WEst Coast Canadian Peter Aspell (1918 – 2004)$20,000.00 A large modern primitive oil on canvas painting titled “The Sunflower Goddess” by Peter Wintherhalter Aspell (1918-2004) signed and dated 1987 at the top left hand corner of he canvas. Born in 1918 in Saanich British Columbia Canada, Aspell‘s first formal training was with the near contemporary artist Jack Shadbolt. His first big breal came in 1947 when one of the world famous Group of Seven Canadian Artist Lauren Harris chose Aspell to represent Canada at the World Youth Festival in Prague. The first solo show followed at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1958. Later the artist held a number of solo and group shows across North America including Toronto, New York,Los Angeles and Chicago. The Sunflower Goddess was introduced in a solo show held at the Heffel Fine Art Gallery in Vancouver in 1987 at a time when the artist was deeply influenced by the primitivism of modern masters such as Modigliani, Derain and Picasso. In this painting the artist is td squat dark skinned men with painted faces. Long interested in primitive art, especiall the symbols and rituals of African and West Coast Indigenoes Art. Peter Apells alegacyH can be found in several public and private collections including the National Gallery Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, Kelowna Art Gallery, the Carlos Monteverde Collection in London, Stern Collection in Chicago and O.J.
