Description Skill Level:  Beginner to AdvancedDuration: 2.5 hours 1pm to 3:30pm, class size is no more than 5 Description:This workshop focuses on the specialized techniques required to properly manage and refine Japanese Black Pine (JBP).  Known for its unique seasonal care requirements, JBP demands a different approach than other bonsai species.  In this class, students will learn the timing, reasoning, and execution behind needle reduction and summer decandling—two of the most critical techniques for developing compact growth and refined structure. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how to balance energy throughout the tree using needle reduction, and how proper fertilization timing directly impacts the success of decandling.  We will walk through the full seasonal cycle, including spring preparation, summer decandling, and fall refinement, emphasizing how each phase influences the next. This class simplifies complex techniques into a practical, repeatable process.  Students will learn how to approach JBP care with confidence, understanding not just what to do, but why each step matters in the long-term development of the tree. Topics Covered: Energy balancing through needle reduction Timing and preparation for decandling Fertilization strategy before and after decandling Proper candle cutting techniques Needle plucking methods and timing Bud development and shoot selection Fall refinement and seasonal care cycle Managing needle length and internode control Prerequisite:Participants should have completed our Beginner Bonsai Class and have a working understanding of basic bonsai care. What to Bring:Participants are encouraged to bring their own Japanese Black Pine for hands on work.  If participants do not have pines to work on, we will pull inventory from BLC to use to gain hands on practice.  Tools are recommended but not required.  Additional supplies are available for purchase in our shop.
